Supply List

Paper:

3 pieces of watercolor paper, roughly quarter sheet size 10 x 14 or 11 x 15 or 12 x 16 and at least 140 pounds. I’ll be working on 12 x 16 blocks. You can use pads, blocks, or loose paper that is taped down. You will also need some scrap pieces upon which to test your brushstrokes.

Paint

  • Bring your usual palette of watercolors. At the very least, you will need to have a split palette of primary colors and you can never have too many shades of blue.
  • The colors that I can’t live without include:
    • Indigo, Paynes gray, green-gold, cobalt, mages, violet, ultramarine, ocher, and sepia, but you can use your own colors.
  • I do not use many staining colors. I will use a lot of different colors of blue and even some browns and purples or other greens, but it’s mostly about value and chroma not so much about color. So bring your regular palette of colors. I recommend only using professional grade pae

Brushes:

Bring your usual assortment of watercolor brushes. I recommend natural hair sable and squirrel. I use mostly size 6 through 12 round (Kolinsky sable brushes), and sizes 2, 4, and 6 mop, Quill brushes. A few synthetic brushes are handy for lifting, and a rigger/liner is also useful.
